The first of the famous MG T-series line, the TA was introduced in 1936. Larger, faster and more comfortable than its PB predecessor, the newcomer was based around a ladder frame chassis equipped with an underslung back axle, all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, Luvax lever-arm dampers, cam steering and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
In keeping with the Nuffield Empire's desire for greater rationalization, the TA shared its MPJG 1292cc four-cylinder engine with the contemporaneous Wolseley / Morris 10hp cars. Though, in MG tune the overhead valve unit boasted a wilder camshaft, improved manifolding and twin SU carburetors all of which contributed towards a quoted 50bhp @ 4,800rpm. Allied to four-speed manual transmission, it endowed the two-seater with a nigh on 80mph top speed.
Traditionalists may have decried the adoption of a more prosaic powerplant, insulating rubber engine mounts and - after a while - synchromesh on 3rd and 4th gears but the TA did much to raise the marque's profile. The vast majority of orders won were for tourers but the model could also be had as a handsome three-position Tickford drophead coupe courtesy of coachbuilder Salmsons or as an ultra-rare `Airline' fixed-head coupe.
Priced from £222, the readily tunable TA had acquired quite a competition pedigree and accounted for 3,003 sales by the time its TB successor arrived in May 1939.
Our car here is finished in Green with a lovely Green interior. It has been beautifully restored in recent years and whislt not in concours condition, it would be difficult to find nicer. It looks and drives like it left the factory 2 years ago. There is a double duck hood, tonneau cover and is ready for its proud new owner.
The market for pre war MG's is increasing every year as more European customers begin to enjoy the fun these cars offer so this car repreents good value in the current climate.
There is nothing to address with this car, just polish it and enjoy the summer!
