Description
1938 Rolls Royce Wraith
SEDANCA COUPE WITH COACHWORK
BY GURNEY NUTTING.
Originally sold new to the World famous actor, musician and comedian George Formby OBE.
Factory records indicate that chassis WRB 2 was originally alocated to Mrs Millicent Ella Hesketh-Wright, of Park Lane London via HR Owen. She had previously been supplied with a new Phantom III but sold it after just 4 months. WRB 2 was then assigned to Major GJ Lucas of Aylesbury according to the factory record. The Lucas family were furniture manufacturers in Aylesbury and still exist today. The young Major Lucas didn’t go through with the purchase, possibly due to other commitments associated with troubles in Europe.
WRB 2 was finally assigned to Mr George Formby of ‘Beryldene’ Poulton-le-Flyde, Lancs, taking delivery in November 1938. George Formby would become the highest paid entertainer in Britain in the 1940’s. Records indicate that George kept the Wraith for just a year, as war had broken out in Europe.
A further 4 owners are listed in the records until 1955. We have yet to uncover further history for chassis WRB 2.
The Wraith was fully restored approximately 10 year ago by a marque specialist to original factory specification and is a delight to drive on the open road. The wraith also being awarded a first in class at an RREC concours confirms the quality and rarity of this special Sedanca.
Our research indicates this is possibly one of only two Sedanca Coupe’s built by Gurney Nutting on the RR Wraith chassis in period.
