Over the course of its 70-year history, Porsche has consistently crafted automobiles at the cutting edge of performance and technology, withthe technological powerhouse that is the 1986 959 and the uncompromisingly thrilling 2005 Carrera GT as two relatively recent examples of the German automaker’s unparalleled and unrelenting innovation. Another such signpost of engineering superiority arrived in 2015 with the Porsche 918 Spyder, which introduced state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid-electric technology to elevate hypercar performance while also increasing efficiency.

The 918 Spyder features a chassis constructed almost entirely of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic composite. At its heart is a naturally aspirated 90-degree V-8 based on the engine in the RS Spyder LMP2 Le Mans Prototype. It can rev to an earth-shaking 9,000 rpm thanks to its flat-plane crankshaft, titanium connection rods, four valves per cylinder, and dry-sump lubrication. Direct fuel injection and the patented Porsche Variocam intake system provide this exclusive model with an exceptional 133 horsepower per liter of displacement.

Supporting the 918 Spyder’s conventional engine are a pair of electric motors; one mated to the V-8 itself and another providing drive to the front axle. Offing an additional 284 horsepower, they bring total output to 887 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque. All this power is managed through the venerable Porsche PDK seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, further managed through five driving modes, ranging from full electric to “Hot Lap,” which squeezes every ounce of available performance from the hybrid powertrain.

Of course, the brakes that bring the car to a halt are just as mighty as the 918 Spyder’s potent powertrain. Massive carbon-ceramic discs measure 410 millimeters in diameter at the front with six-piston calipers and 390 millimeters at the rear with four-piston calipers. An adjustable rear wing, a pair of under-floor flaps in the nose, and flaps in the headlamp area automatically adjust on the fly to provide either maximum efficiency or additional downforce, according to the car’s driving modes and the driving conditions.

The 918 Spyder’s performance is nothing short of exceptional. A sprint from 0–60 mph takes less than 2.5 seconds—quicker than its hybrid hypercar rivals, the Ferrari LaFerrari McLaren P1. Enthusiasts in pursuit of even more extreme performance could opt for the lightweight Weissach Package, which included magnesium alloy center-locking wheels, titanium chassis hardware, ceramic wheel bearings, fabric door-pull straps instead of conventional handles, and six-point harnesses.

918 SPYDER NUMBER 438

This outstanding Weissach Package-equipped 918 Spyder is presented in the striking color combination of White (0Q) over a particularly rare leather-trimmed Weissach-spec interior, finely finished with trim-to-sample silver piping, silver-accented seat belts, and a matching pair of carbon floor mats. In addition to the full complement of leather upholstery, the original owner further specified dual-zone air conditioning, a glovebox, and the Burmester high-end surround sound system—none of which were standard equipment for the Weissach Package. Additional items of note are the ever-appreciated front-axle lift system, stone guard, glare-reduction package, and standard-length charging cable.

Delivered new via Porsche West Palm Beach in January 2015, the original owner regularly enjoyed the 918 Spyder for several years, treating it to regular servicing exclusively at the originating dealer.

Following 9,740 miles of use, in January 2020, it was purchased by the consignor and has been driven fewer than 200 miles since, indicating 9,936 miles at the time of cataloguing. Notably, the 918 Spyder received its most recent service from Porsche Carlsbad in November 2023.

Pioneering plug-in hybrid-electric technology for not only Porsche as a company, but the supercar industry as a whole, the 918 Spyder is truly a landmark vehicle. One of the fastest cars that money can buy, yet docile enough to drive daily—in total silence with full-electric mode—it is unquestionably among the most intriguing and exciting cars of the 21st century, combining an intoxicating mélange of hybrid technology, motorsports heritage, and mind-bending performance. This tastefully specified 918 Spyder brings all those compelling attributes to bear in one finely crafted package, further enhanced with the ultra-desirable Weissach Package.
