1968 Maserati Mistral Spider 4.0

Im Laufe der 1960er Jahre machte Maserati große Fortschritte, um sich als italienischer Hersteller attraktiver Grand-Tourer-Fahrzeuge zu etablieren. Die zeitgenössischen Modelle 3500 GT und 5000 GT waren atemberaubende Beispiele für das Design von Coupés und Cabriolets. 1963 wurde der Mistral eingeführt, der den 3500 GT ablöste und das letzte Modell des Unternehmens war, das mit dem charakteristischen Reihensechszylinder-Motor mit doppelter Nockenwelle ausgestattet war, der aus der erfolgreichen Rennsportzeit von Maserati stammte. Noch im Besitz der Familie Orsi und vor der Übernahme durch Citroën präsentierte Maserati kurz nacheinander den Ghibli, den Mexico und den Sebring, um den Mistral zu ergänzen und das GT-Angebot zu erweitern.

Als die Produktion des Mistral anlief, ermöglichte ein steiferes und kürzeres Chassis aus Vierkantrohrelementen dem neuen Modell, sich durch seinen sportlicheren Charakter vom Sebring zu unterscheiden. Auch in stilistischer Hinsicht wurden weitere Fortschritte erzielt: Pietro Frua entwarf eine elegante und moderne Karosserie für den Wagen. Die Spider-Version wurde kurz nach dem Coupé im Jahr 1964 eingeführt, mit nicht weniger als drei Motorvarianten des berühmten, rennerprobten Maserati-Reihensechszylinders.

Das hier gezeigte Exemplar mit der Fahrgestellnummer #SA1.713 wurde am 13.07.1968 bei Maserati fertiggestellt. Im gleichen Jahr begannen die Dreharbeiten für den italienischen Film „La Bambolona“ mit Ugo Tognazzi und Isabella Rei in den Hauptrollen. Dieser Maserati Mistral Spider wurde von der Produktionsfirma von Maserati geordert und im Film eingesetzt. Zeitgenössische Dokumente und tolle Filmaufnahmen bestätigen den Einsatz von #SA1.713.

1969 wurde das Fahrzeug dann an den Musikmanager Ronald S. Kass aus London
verkauft. Später ging der Mistral in die USA wo er bis Anfang der 2000er verblieb. 2011 war #SA1.713 zurück in Europa bei einem Oldtimer Händler in Brittnau, Schweiz. Im Jahr 2015 erwarb der jetzige deutsche Eigentümer den Wagen von der Sportgarage Ruch und ließ ihn in Schwarz lackieren. Die Innenausstattung wurde ebenfalls in Leder Cognac neu angefertigt. Außerdem erhielt er ein neues Verdeck.

Wir haben den Maserati von dem Markenhistoriker Walter Bäumer prüfen lassen. Der Mistral verfügt noch über seinen ersten Motorblock und ist somit Matching Numbers.

Insgesamt wurden vom Maserati Mistral Spider 124 Fahrzeuge in drei unterschiedlichen Motorvarianten gebaut. Der hier präsentierte 4.0 Liter Motor ist mit 258PS / 190kW die stärkste Version und wurde nur 51 Mal gebaut.

1968 Maserati Mistral Spider 4.0

During the 1960s, Maserati made great strides in establishing itself as an Italian
manufacturer of attractive grand tourer vehicles. The contemporary 3500 GT and 5000 GT models were stunning examples of coupé and convertible design. 1963 saw the introduction of the Mistral, which replaced the 3500 GT and was the company's last model to be fitted with the characteristic straight-six engine with twin camshafts that dated back to Maserati's successful racing days. Still owned by the Orsi family and before the takeover by Citroën, Maserati presented the Ghibli, the Mexico and the Sebring in quick succession to complement the Mistral and expand the GT range.

When production of the Mistral began, a stiffer and shorter chassis made of square
tubular elements enabled the new model to be distinguished from the Sebring by its sportier character. Further progress was also made in terms of style: Pietro Frua
designed an elegant and modern body for the car. The Spider version was introduced shortly after the Coupé in 1964, with no less than three engine variants of the famous, race-proven Maserati straight-six.

The example shown here with chassis number #SA1.713 was completed at Maserati on 13 July 1968. In the same year, the production began for the Italian film "La
Bambolona" starring Ugo Tognazzi and Isabella Rei. This Maserati Mistral Spider was ordered by the Maserati production company and used in the film. Contemporary documents and great film footage confirm the use of #SA1.713.

In 1969, the vehicle was then sold to the music manager Ronald S. Kass from London. The Mistral later went to the USA, where it remained until the early 2000s. In 2011, #SA1.713 was back in Europe at a classic car dealer in Brittnau, Switzerland. In 2015, the current German owner acquired the car from Sportgarage Ruch and had it painted black. The interior was also redone in cognac leather. It also received a new soft top.

We had the Maserati inspected by marque historian Walter Bäumer. The Mistral still has its first engine block and is therefore matching numbers.

A total of 124 vehicles of the Maserati Mistral Spider were built in three different engine variants. The 4.0 litre engine presented here is the most powerful version with 258HP / 190kW and was only built 51 times.
