"Enrico Fumia of Pininfarina's low slung wedge design with high 'kammtail' was reminiscent of his earlier Audi-based Pininfarina Quartz prototype of 1981. The striking lines of the new Grand Turismo Veloce (GTV) and Spiders, revealed at Geneva Salon in 1995, earned countless prestigious design awards from most motoring quarters. Characteristically, the car features concealed headlamps, designed in conjunction with Carello, mounted beneath a clamshell bonnet with illumination port-holes. Build quality was notably a close match to its German rivals and the GTV/Spider helped considerably with rejuvenating Alfa Romeo's reputation for beautiful design and quality crafted sportscars. The year 2000, two-litre cars were fitted with an upgraded twin-cam engine with 153bhp.
